How to Know Whether You Need a Squarespace Website Reset or a Website Design Day
The Question Behind Almost Every Inquiry
One of my favourite parts of every inquiry actually happens before I've written a single word of my reply.
I make myself a coffee, settle in at my desk, and spend some time wandering through someone's website. I click from page to page, read their story, look through their portfolio, and try to understand not just what they do, but who they've become since they first launched their business.
By the time I open my email to respond, I've usually already noticed something interesting.
Almost no one is asking the question they think they're asking.
On the surface, someone might write, "I'm wondering if you could help with my website," or "I'm not sure which service would be the best fit." But underneath those questions is usually something much more human.
They're wondering if they're imagining it. If the feeling they've had for months—that something about their website no longer feels quite right—is actually real.
I think that's one of the reasons I love this stage of business so much.
It's rarely about a broken website. It's about a business that's outgrown the version of itself it introduced to the world a few years earlier.
Most Websites Don't Need to Be Replaced
One of the biggest misconceptions I see in my industry is the idea that every website eventually needs to be torn down and rebuilt from scratch. I don't believe that's true. In fact, I'd say the opposite is true more often than not.
Most of the websites I review already have something really valuable. The business owner has spent years refining their services, building relationships with clients, creating meaningful work, and learning what actually works inside their business. Their website may not communicate all of that as clearly as it could, but the foundation is almost always there.
That's why I don't immediately think, "This needs a redesign."
My first thought is usually much quieter than that.
"What already works here?"
"What's worth keeping?"
"Where has this business grown?"
I think that's an important distinction because it completely changes the conversation. Instead of asking how quickly we can replace everything, we begin asking how we can build on everything that's already been created with so much care.
Sometimes a Website Just Needs Someone in Its Corner
There is a season in business that I think almost every service provider experiences. Your website is... fine. You don't dislike it. It still reflects your brand reasonably well. Your services are mostly up to date.
But there's also a running list in the back of your mind that seems to grow a little longer every month. You'd love someone to improve the mobile experience. There are a few pages that could flow better.
SEO has been sitting on your to-do list for the better part of a year. You keep meaning to update your portfolio, but client work always seems to take priority.
Sound familiar?
I think this is one of the most common places people find themselves, and it's exactly why I created the Website Design Day Not because your website needs a dramatic transformation. Because sometimes what you really need is someone to sit down beside you, roll up their sleeves, and spend a focused day tackling the things you simply haven't had time to do yourself.
There's something incredibly satisfying about ending the day with a shorter to-do list and a website that finally feels like it's supporting your business again.
Other Times, Your Website Isn't Simply Unfinished, It's Outgrown.
There's another season of business that feels quite different.
It's harder to describe because, on the surface, nothing is necessarily "wrong." Your website still functions. The links work. Your contact form sends emails. The colours are still the ones you chose a few years ago.
And yet... every time you look at it, something feels slightly out of step.
I've come to think of this as the moment when your website begins introducing a previous version of your business.
Perhaps you've become known for something completely different than when you first launched. Maybe you've refined your services, found your niche, raised your prices, or developed a client experience that feels far more thoughtful than it did in those early years. The business has matured in all the ways you hoped it would.
The website simply hasn't had the opportunity to grow alongside it.
I think this is one of the most exciting stages of entrepreneurship because it means you've been paying attention. You've listened to your clients. You've refined your process. You've become clearer about the work you want to do and the people you want to serve.
That kind of growth deserves to be reflected online.
This Is Where a Website Reset Begins
When people hear the words Website Reset, they often imagine a complete redesign. In reality, I think of it much differently.
A Website Reset isn't about erasing what you've built. It's about uncovering the business that's already there and making sure your website tells that story with the same confidence you do.
Before I touch a single design element, I spend time understanding how your business works today. I ask questions like:
What do people ask you most often?
Where do new clients tend to get stuck?
What makes your approach different?
How are people finding you—or perhaps more importantly, why aren't they?
From there, every decision has a purpose.
Your messaging becomes clearer.
Your pages become easier to navigate.
Your calls-to-action become more intentional.
Your SEO begins supporting the business you've worked so hard to build.
By the time we're finished, the goal isn't simply to have a more beautiful website. It's to have a website that quietly works alongside you, answering questions, building trust, and helping the right people feel confident enough to reach out before you've even opened your inbox.
I've always believed that's what good design should do.
So... How Do You Know Which One Is Right for You?
After working with so many service providers over the years, I've realized the answer usually isn't found by looking at the services. It's often found by listening to the questions you're already asking yourself.
If you've been thinking,
"I actually like my website. I just wish someone could help me finish everything I've started."
or,
"There are so many little things I've been putting off, and I just don't have time anymore."
Then a Website Design Day is probably exactly what you're looking for.
It's designed for businesses with a solid foundation that simply need focused support, thoughtful refinements, and an experienced eye to bring everything together.
But if your thoughts sound more like,
"This doesn't really feel like us anymore."
"People don't seem to understand what we actually do."
"We've grown so much, but our website still feels like it belongs to the business we started."
That's usually a sign you're ready for a Website Reset.
Because you've grown. And that's a wonderful reason to invest in your business.
A Gentle Reminder
If there's one thing I'd love for you to take away from this article, it's this:
You don't need to know exactly what you need before reaching out.
In fact, I think we've become so used to researching everything ourselves that we sometimes forget it's okay to ask for guidance. You're not expected to know whether your website needs a Design Day or a Website Reset any more than you're expected to know how to optimize your SEO or improve your site's user experience. That's my job.
Every inquiry I receive begins the same way. I make myself a coffee, spend some time exploring your website, and try to understand the business behind it before I recommend anything at all.
Sometimes I'll suggest a Website Design Day. Sometimes a Website Reset. Because my goal has never been to recommend the biggest investment. It's simply to recommend the one I genuinely believe will support your business best.
Ready for your next chapter?
Whether your website needs a focused day of thoughtful improvements or a more comprehensive transformation, I'd love to help you figure out what makes the most sense for your business.
You don't need to have all the answers before you inquire. Just a website, a story, and a sense that you're ready for whatever comes next.
From there, we'll figure it out together.
